JPG, PNG, WebP — square or portrait works best
Instagram's profile pic displays at 320×320 in the app and 110×110 in feeds. But uploading at exactly 320×320 means Instagram re-compresses a small image, and the result is fuzzy. Uploading at 1080×1080 (or larger square) lets Instagram pick a clean down-sample, giving you crisper edges on Retina/HiDPI screens and in story-ring previews.
Cropping happens entirely in your browser via Canvas. Nothing is uploaded.
